Infosec recruiters look for individuals who can do the job but who also make a difference in the security industry. Many people can go through the motions to get the job done. Recruiters are interested in those who are innovative enough to follow through and improve upon security methods to move a rapidly changing industry forward. Security management employers are searching for professionals with application development backgrounds and application security backgrounds. Specific technical tools which help boost this experience include NMAP, NESSUS, Metasploit, Snort and AppScan. Additionally, employers desire security professionals who understand security packages and architecture. Experience with SIEM is a huge plus in the industry. Threat and Vulnerability Management adds a boost to the other combined skills.

Many companies are looking at skills and certifications over MBA’s for entry-level employees. A rising number of industry leaders seek out those holding a security certificate and keep those with MBA’s for mid-level to senior-level leadership roles.

It is believed that a certification will give an employer a better understanding of the candidate’s area of expertise. For example, a CISSP lets an employer know that a candidate possesses a general understanding of the industry while the SANS certificate demonstrates the amount of technical depth possessed by the candidate. Employers are leaning on certification as a way of screening candidates.
